The consortium consists of 5 contractor organizations from 4 countries:
The partenariat is of significantly high calibre and matches the knowledge value and high prestige of the research centre/university to the important communication and outreach capacities of the science centre. The partners enjoy national, European and in cases international recognition in their respective fields. The leading institution, the Eugenides Foundation, is considered a landmark of science and technology education in Greece, and its science diffusion activities are of European radius. It attracts a yearly population reaching 500.000 visitors (50% adults and 50% students mainly of secondary education) which makes the EF the second most popular visiting site in Greece. It is currently carrying out a major programme of content digitisation (educational own-published books and manuals, library items, scientific photographic material, scientific exhibits etc) funded by the Information Society / 3rd Community Support Framework. Upon the completion of this project, the digitised material will become educational resources and valorised in consequent e-learning programmes. For its offer to Greek society it has received the Gold Medal of the Academy of Athens and various other awards. It is internationally known for its New Digital Planetarium, the largest and best equipped digital planetarium in the world.
The Greek Research and Technology Network (GRNET) develops and provides advanced services of national and international internet access to the Research, Academic and Education communities of Greece, with its gigabit GRNET2 network and the Virtual NOC supportive scheme. The network connects 27 Universities, 15 Technical Universities, 33 Research Institutions and 12,673 schools to the Pan-European Research and Education Network, GEANT. GRNET supports national and international actions which aim at the integration of e-Learning, Internet technologies and their use within the Greek business environment, with a focus on Small to Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).
The CeDis/Freie Universität Berlin is widely known for its offer of a broad range of high quality interactive e- teaching/ learning materials for education and advanced education, conceived, realized and provided with own means and IT infrastructures, based on innovative technologies. CeDiS presents regularly popular scientific content to the public at the big annual event “Long Night of Science” in Berlin.
The Laboratoire Francis Perrin (LFP) is a joint research unit of the Atomic Energy Commissariat (CEA) and the National Center for the Scientific Research (CNRS) and conducts research in the field of physical chemistry by focusing on the interaction of light with molecular systems and nanostructures. The CNRS is the largest research institution in Europe, no need to comment on its achievements and contribution in the development of pioneering research. The scientific results produced in the LFP are regularly published in high rated international journals (Nature, Angewante Chemie, Journal of the American Chemical Society, etc.). Some important results are disseminated toward a broader public mainly via pathways developed by its one of the mother institutions, CEA and CNRS.
Last but not least, the Science Communication Observatory and its leading figures have contributed significantly in the recently-shaped policy of science communication in Europe with a particular focus on the local level. The SCO participates in the project ESCITY-Europe Science and the City: Promoting Science Culture at Local Level, a EC financed project whose main aim is to set the basis for a new European network of local and regional governments, as well as other institutions, involved in promoting science at local level. ECSITY will be a ground for cooperation with the e-KNOWNET, and the link of the project with the level of local communities.
